Cedar Swamp Trail
After finishing our snack at the Marconi Overlook we walked down Cedar Swamp Trail. Cedar Swamp Trail is a trail that leads down into a dried up kettle. A kettle is a pond or lake that was formed by a piece of ice that broke off from a retreating glacier. This glacier also formed Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and other islands. When we first started walking down the trail the vegetation was small shrubs and trees. This is because tall plants are not able to hold up to the strong wind blowing over the Atlantic Ocean. As we walked deeper and deeper into the kettle the plants became taller and more lush. This is because the other plants and the slope of the kettle were breaking the wind. By the time we were on the bottom of the kettle, the lush vegetation and tall cedars made it look like we were in a rainforest. Also in the middle we had to walk on a boardwalk because the ground was wet and swampy. Somewhere in the middle we stopped to take observations of what we saw. Then we continued down the path which made a loop back to the parking lot.
